Living in a Digital World

We live in a world where everything is connected. Our phones, laptops, smart TVs, bank accounts, health records, and even home doorbells. This is the digital age, While technology makes life easier, it also opens doors for cyber threats as well.

You might have heard stories like:

  • Scammers targeted pensioners following a ransomware attack on the Department of Pensions in Sri Lanka.

  • Facebook and WhatsApp accounts are being hacked and used to scam friends.

  • Cargills Bank experienced a data breach involving credit card information and other personally identifiable information (PII).

All of these are cybersecurity issues.

🔐 What Is Cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting our systems, networks, and data from unauthorized access, attacks, or damage. Think of it as the lock and alarm system for your digital house.

It involves:

  • Securing websites and apps

  • Preventing hackers from stealing your information

  • Detecting suspicious behaviour in networks

  • Responding quickly when something goes wrong

Whether you’re a student, teacher, IT professional, or anyone else cybersecurity affects all of us. It’s not limited to your job or role. Even if you’re a farmer or a housewife, you can still fall victim to these types of cyber attacks.

🛡️ What Is Digital Safety?

Now, let’s talk about digital safety. A term that’s often confused with cybersecurity.

Digital safety is more about your behavior online. It includes:

  • Using strong passwords

  • Not clicking on suspicious links

  • Protecting your privacy on social media

  • Teaching kids how to be safe online

In short:📌 Cybersecurity = Technical protection📌 Digital safety = Personal behavior and awareness

🔍 Real-World Example: A Simple Mistake, Big Impact

Let’s take a real-life example:

Incident: A government officer receives an email saying, “Your account will be closed unless you verify your password.”

She clicks the link and enters her login info. That link was fake, and it was created by an attacker. A few minutes later, her email is used to send malicious files to hundreds of contacts.

This is phishing, a common cyber attack.

What went wrong?

  • ❌ No technical filter to block the phishing email (cybersecurity gap)

  • ❌ The officer didn’t recognize the red flags in the message (digital safety gap)

Both layers failed.

💡 Why Should YOU Care About Cybersecurity?

Even if you’re not an IT professional, you need basic cyber knowledge.

WHY ???

  • Your banking apps, social media, and emails contain private data.

  • Hackers target individuals, not just companies.

  • Cybercrime is rising fast. In Sri Lanka and globally, people lose money, jobs, and even reputations due to digital attacks.

✅ How You Can Stay Safe

🔐 Be cautious of emails or links that feel odd🔐 Use multi-factor authentication (like SMS codes)🔐 Update your devices regularly🔐 Back up your data🔐 Follow trusted cybersecurity pages or blogs (like this one!)

👩‍💻 Final Thoughts

Cybersecurity is not just a job, it’s a shared responsibility. Whether you’re an engineer, a student, or a business owner, understanding the basics of cybersecurity and digital safety can protect you, your family, and your future.

This is just the beginning. In my upcoming posts, I’ll share simple tips, real-world attack stories, and tools you can use to build cyber awareness.
